Tournament Dates for the 2008-2009 Fencing Season

The Gulf Coast Division of the United States Fencing Association held their annual tournament scheduling meeting on Friday, August 15 at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center. All fencing clubs in the Gulf Coast Division who wished to sponsor tournaments this season met to work out their schedules.

The Galveston Fencing Club traditionally holds two tournaments, one in the fall, one in the spring.

Our traditional fall tournament, the Naomia Abbott Memorial, will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008. The Naomia Abbott Memorial is a all-women's tournament.

Our traditional spring tournament, the Jean Laffite Classic, will be held on April 25, 2009. The Jean Laffite Classic is a competition for fencers who do not currently have a USFA letter-ranking in the weapon they are fencing.

The Galveston Fencing Club's president gave a talk at the August meeting of the Laffite Society. We thank them for the invitation and chance to meet them.

The Galveston Fencing Club gave a public fencing demonstration at the Historic Downtown Galveston Farmer's Market on Saturday, June 14. The event was held in Saengerfest Park at 23rd Street & The Strand.

Congratulations to all the fencers who participated in our 2nd annual Jean Laffite Classic Tournament on Saturday, May 31st. Winners info may be found on the Galveston Tournaments page .

The Galveston Fencing Club was visited in January by local photographer Gordon Haire (two of his photos are on this page). This resulted in a brief article on page 12 of the Galveston Wizard.
